100th Grey Cup Half-Time Disaster
I have never been one to watch half-time music performances at sporting events because I would have to sit through the actual game that surrounds the half-time performance. And, to me, that is nearly as bad as paying money to see Rihanna in concert or some other awful ‘artist’.
Recently, a co-worker of mine let me know that at this years 100th Grey Cup half-time performance will feature non other than Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench and for good measure, Gordon Lightfoot. I can’t think of a better way to display the talent in this country than to hire Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Marianas Trench to perform at a nationally televised sporting event (to those who can’t read the sarcasm…you’re an idiot)
Now, I realize that someone organizing the Grey Cup festivities thought to themselves “we need to fill the rock quota” which resulted in organizing the Molson Canadian House Concert Series featuring Matthew Good and Sam Roberts Band. This event, however, is not televised live during the half-time special and is two days before the event itself.
I understand that to please the masses you require a POP act during the half-time special itself, I get that. However, to include three in one billing and then chuck in an aging rock star for good measure, is an insult to this country. I’m not into sports, but I can make a pretty good guess that many of these people who are watching the game are not going to be singing along to Carly Rae Jepsen…just sayin. Canada has talent in music, and this is a great opportunity to display some of that talent and not just the awful POP….fuck I’d even be fine with Bryan Adams, now that’s saying something.
Anyways, enjoy the travesty that is the Grey Cup half-time show this Sunday.
